Trin for trin
- 1
Before beginning any passive movement, it is essential to have the patient calm and relaxed. Dr. Pawson establishes a neutral starting position. The client (Leo) is comfortable on an upholstered treatment table. The black cat physiotherapist supports the limb above and below the joint being worked. Here, Dr. Pawson stabilizes the elbow with his left paw while gently holding Leo's carpus (wrist) with his right. The limb is held straight but not extended.
- 2
The exercise begins with a slow, controlled movement. Dr. Pawson initiates the flexion by gently guiding Leo's paw upward and inward. He applies slight pressure at the carpus to guide the bend. Crucially, the upper arm and shoulder remain stabilized, limiting movement strictly to the elbow and carpus. The goal is gentle mobility, not stretching. Dr. Pawson maintains a relaxed, encouraging posture.
- 3
The physiotherapist continues the flexion until the joint reaches its natural, comfortable limit (the "end-feel"). This is the peak of the therapeutic movement. In this image, Dr. Pawson has carefully guided Leo's paw until it softly touches his chest. The limb is fully, gently folded. Dr. Pawson holds this position for 2 to 3 seconds to allow the tissues to relax at the end of the range. The professional demeanor of the black cat PT ensures the client remains calm during the deepest part of the flexion.
- 4
The final step is just as important as the first. The joint is not allowed to snap back. Dr. Pawson guides the limb through a controlled extension, reversing the movement from Step 2, and returns Leo's paw softly to the starting table surface. To conclude the single repetition and encourage positive association with the therapy, Dr. Pawson immediately reinforces the successful movement. As seen here, he offers Leo a small, salmon-colored treat, completing the therapeutic loop with positive reinforcement. This maintains the professional yet gentle tone necessary for a client website.
